Is Summer the Easiest Time to Start Potty Training?
More time at home, warmer weather, more outside time. It sounds like the perfect setup to start your potty training journey. And for lots of families, it can be.
But, that doesn’t mean it’s the best time for your toddler or family to start.
Before you circle that first summer day on the calendar, let's talk about what actually makes summer work, and what can get in the way.
What summer has going for it
✔️ Summer clothing is less bulky and usually easier for them to manage by themselves. The more independent they can be, the more motivation they have to keep trying over and over again.
✔️ Accidents outside are usually less stressful than accidents on your couch. You can keep the potty outside while you’re playing, and if they make it, great. If not, run through the sprinkler again.
✔️ Schedules are usually more relaxed, so you have more time at home and less time rushing from one activity to the next. That means you can slow down and go at your own pace.
What can work against you
✔️ Spontaneous outings with friends and family can make it harder to keep things consistent. Toddlers learn faster when their routine is predictable and summer doesn't always offer that.
✔️ Skipped naps on busy days can also reduce their impulse control and body awareness, two things that help them stop what they’re doing and go potty when they need it.
✔️ If you have vacations planned, adding a brand new potty user to the mix of airports or long car rides can add a lot of stress.
✔️ Heat and dehydration can actually increase accidents, which sounds counterintuitive, so it’s even more important to keep them hydrated.
The most important question to ask
Everyone’s summer will look different, so choose what works best for your family.
And before deciding, think about where your little one is developmentally right now.
Because the thing that matters even more than the season… is readiness.
Summer can be a great time to start, but if your toddler isn’t developmentally ready, the season won’t magically change that.
So readiness is always the starting point.
