Make the diaper → potty transition feel easier (even if you’re feeling overwhelmed)
If potty training is on the horizon and it’s feeling a bit…
✔️ big
✔️ confusing
✔️ like there’s way too much advice coming at you from every direction…
You're not alone, and I’ve got you covered ❤️
Because a few simple shifts can make this transition feel so much smoother, for both of you!
Start with prep
One of the biggest mistakes I see is feeling like you just have to rip the bandaid off and go for it. But toddlers do so much better when they’re prepared first.
You can start by:
✔️ Reading books about using the potty
✔️ Letting them see and explore the potty
✔️ Modeling it for them without any pressure to participate just yet
When kids know what to expect, everything feels less scary. And when things feel less scary, they’re much more willing to try.
Use play (especially the kind they already love)
Toddler brains are wired to learn through play, so it’s one of the easiest ways to teach them a new skill. Not only does it keep them engaged, but it reduces the pressure and stress AND builds their comfort and confidence at the same time!
You can try:
✔️ Setting up a race car track with a potty pit stop
✔️ Singing potty songs
✔️ Using hand soap that changes colors when they use it
Match their personality
Every toddler comes into this transition differently.
Some feel nervous.
Some want control.
Some just like to take their time.
Some like routines.
Some want variety.
Instead of pushing them to respond how we want them to, support what they’re showing us.
✔️ Feeling nervous → Let them warm up slowly
✔️ Wanting control → Offer simple choices
✔️ Taking their time → Keep things low pressure
This is where connection becomes your biggest tool!
Tiny shifts can make a big difference
When we focus on prep, play, and emotional support, parents often notice shifts like:
✔️ More confidence
✔️ Less resistance
✔️ More connection
✔️ Less stress for you
It doesn’t mean this milestone will go perfectly, but it means it will FEEL less stressful, for both of you.
Remember…
This isn’t one-size-fits-all. Do what works best for your little one and your family! That’s what makes this process feel calmer and more sustainable.
